Typically, such systems include a base unit and a plurality of remote transceivers. The base unit, also known as the transceiver, communicates with a plurality of remote transceivers over a radio frequency (RF) link or a power line connection.
The remote transceivers may be hand-held devices or may be part of a portable device or an automobile. The base unit is typically provided with a power supply and includes electronic circuitry (i.e., transceiver and possibly a controller) that handles a multitude of functions such as transmission, reception, and processing. The remote transceivers may include transceivers for portable applications, or transceivers for vehicular applications.
